I have the option of removing my permanent retainer–should I go through with it?

I had braces for several years when I was younger. After they were removed, my orthodontist placed a permanent retainer on my top front teeth. I had a removable retainer for my bottom teeth (which I eventually stopped wearing, and the teeth have shifted a good deal since then).

I’ve now had the permanent retainer for almost 8 years. My orthodontist and my former dentist never mentioned anything about it ever being removed. I saw a new dentist for the first time today, and he seemed surprised that I still have it in. He offered to remove it for me, but said that (obviously) I should probably get a removable retainer to wear at night.

I’m not sure what I want to do. I NEVER floss because it’s such a pain to work around the retainer. I don’t want to end up getting gum disease somewhere down the line, but I also don’t want to risk having my teeth shift around (I’m not sure if I can trust myself to keep up with wearing a removable retainer).

Any suggestions?

Should I brush my gum where I have lost a tooth?

I recently lost one of my front teeth in a motorbike accident. It is out completely. Not broken or anything. I have been brushing my teeth like usual, but I don’t know whether to brush the gum where the tooth used to be. I am using a mouthwash everyday but don’t know if it will clean the space well enough.
Does anyone know if it is a good or bad idea to brush the exposed gum?

I have a bubble on my top gums above my front teeth. Is it serious?

It doesn’t hurt, it’s pink like the rest of my gums, and it seems pretty soft. When I press it, I can feel a little pressure on the tooth below it. I’ve had it for about 5 days now, should I be worried?

I’m having gum pain, but I’m terrified of the dentist.help?

Recently my gums have started hurting when I brush them. One of my front teeth hurts and almost feels loose. The problem is that I am so afraid of the dentist, I can’t even call to make the appointment! I used to go to the dentist regularly when I was a child. I’m now twenty six, and I haven’t gone since I was eighteen! I know it’s ridiculous, but the last time I made an appointment to go, I sat in the parking lot and actually vomitted twice then left. Is there a way to get over this or some special dentist that will knock me out or something? What do I do? I’m afraid of my teeth getting really bad.

Gum Infection between my four top front teeth? Are my braces doing this?

Hi There, I’ve had braces for about 7 months now, and due the the moving of my top four front teeth i have found it hard to reach some places and clean it properly. The gums at the back of my top four front teeth are quite red, they bleed when i brush them and i sometimes get a sort of scab thing when i wake up in the mornings. (its wierd and im real scared!) I really **** my dentist with a passion as she makes me feel really uncomfortable and i have a severe phobia of the dentist anyway so this doesnt help. I went to the dentist about 3 weeks ago and she said everything was fine, but in the past week i have noticed it more. I only brush ones daily, could this be the problem? As i know you’re supposed to brush twice daily. It looks a little bit better today, but i still cant really tell and its stressing me out! I’ve been under loads of pressure and stress at college could this cause it also? I have one of those brushes that brush between my wires which i use everyday aswell!

Complicated dental probs can I keep my teeth (Cont)?

Bad TMJ,jaw pops loud painful. Chew gum freedent- don’t drink nearly as much Dew, but some daily, drink lots of sugarfree red bull. My teeth seem to me like they are “disintegrating”.My upper left tooth is half Gone (from decay..not black or smelly though)Upper right back tooth has big hole etc.Tooth on the lower right farthest back has a silver filling and is black in a large part of tooth.normal colored part of tooth “curling” away from the black part, causes sharp edges & sores to my mouth & tongue. 2 front teeth- cavity started n between them, now caused a huge gap. Frnt teeth very thin,I can almost see thru them.I can see the decay spreading inward on the front teeth, like it could form a circle (hole) when together. The bone loss is what scares me. I am only 28-are dentures the only option already?Veeners?Implants?Whats the cost on full mouth +tx of gum disease. My teeth look old!!Important to me to be pretty & young looking again despite my past avoidance of dentists.Option

How common are dark gums?

I know this is a stupid or pointless question, but I was born really dark gums on my front teeth and the only other person I know to have this is my sister. Does anyone else have dark gums or is there something odd about mine?
Well first of all, I don’t have a lot of blemishes. Second of all, my family has a darker skin tone than me and yet most of them have pink gums except one sister like I said. That’s why I wanted to know if it was weird.

What will hurt more: Going to the dentist or commiting *******?

I have always thought about death. Killing myself. It has become normal for me to think about it whenever I get real depressed. Lately, I’ve noticed cavities in my front teeth getting larger and larger. They HURT! My upper front teeth are decaying and that is something I know is socially unacceptable and unhealthy to look at!
I would like to know: would it be better just to go to the dentist (with luck that I would have pain relievers) that would fix my teeth?? They look bad enough, surely with all my front teeth hurting my gums like hell. My other option is — just dying off. I am still “young” so I don’t know what to think.
No one is around to listen to my problems, so I am stuck posting this question to you all. (They have their own, and I bet you all have yours, too)
I don’t have a lot of money to do much in life. So that leaves out a lot of options for me. My parent says that insurance will have to wait till next month. Hurrah, by next month, all my teeth will turn brown and rot.

Sore gums from retainer?

I have to wear a small rubber band around my front 4 teeth to keep them from shifting, and also a retainer. I’ve been doing it for 4 years and 4 days ago i woke up in alot of pain. I look in the mirror and my gums are red and swollen and my teeth are very sore. also on the roof of my mouth all the way down behind my front 2 teeth is very sore. What is going on? Infection? Also it is only bad by the 4 front teeth
Sorry for the misunderstanding but I only have to wear the rubberband and retainer at night.
